SJRFD Stage 2 Written Exam

Format
100 multiple-choice questions in 1.5 hours, based on chapters 3 to 20 of IFSTA Essentials of Fire Fighting, 7th edition
Scoring
Pass mark 70%. Candidates below 70% are eliminated. IFSTA recommended answers are deemed correct and there is no appeal process
Weighting
The 5-stage process is graded out of 100%: Application 25%, Written Exam 25%, Cognitive Ability Assessment 10%, Interview 40%, Pre-Employment Medical fit/non-fit
Remote option
Candidates outside Newfoundland and Labrador may write remotely, but on the same day
Administered by
St. Johns Regional Fire Department
Entry requirement
Firefighter II certification from an IFSAC or ProBoard certified facility is required at application

Prep priority

The exam is designed for entry-level candidates with little fire experience, but it is textbook-specific — study IFSTA Essentials 7th edition chapters 3-20 directly. The interview is worth 40%, more than the written exam
