CPAT preparation

CPAT PREPARATION FOR CANADIAN CANDIDATES

The physical evaluation is where preparation is most visible and least forgiving. It is a work-capacity test in a weighted vest, not a gym test.

The eight events

Stair climb, hose drag, equipment carry, ladder raise and extension, forcible entry, search, rescue drag, and ceiling breach and pull — performed consecutively against a single time standard.

The stair climb sets up everything that follows. Candidates who attack it too hard arrive at the hose drag with no grip and no breathing control left.

What actually fails people

Grip endurance, aerobic capacity under load, and pacing. Raw maximum strength matters far less than the ability to keep working at a high percentage of it for several minutes.

Train with a loaded vest or pack where facilities allow, and train transitions between events rather than each event in isolation.

A simple weekly structure

Two aerobic sessions, two loaded-carry and grip sessions, one full-body strength session and one simulation or circuit session, with at least one genuine rest day.

Retest your benchmarks monthly. Progress you cannot measure is progress you cannot trust before a hiring window opens.

Preparation checklist

  • Confirm whether your department uses CPAT or its own evaluation
  • Benchmark stair climb, drag, carry and grip strength today
  • Add loaded carries and farmer walks twice a week
  • Build a continuous aerobic base of 30 to 45 minutes
  • Run a full simulation four weeks before your test date

Frequently asked questions

What is CPAT?

The Candidate Physical Ability Test is a standardised, timed sequence of eight job-related events performed in a weighted vest, used by many fire services in North America.

How long should I train before CPAT?

Give yourself at least eight to twelve weeks if you already train regularly, and longer if you are building an aerobic base from scratch.

Do all Canadian departments use CPAT?

No. Some services run their own job-task evaluation instead. Confirm the exact physical evaluation your target department uses before you build your plan around it.
