The 2026 Full-time Probationary Firefighter competition closed on 9 September 2026. Use the gap to prepare for the next one: advertised requirements were Grade 12 or approved equivalent, Standard First Aid with CPR Level C, and a valid Ontario Class DZ licence with ZERO demerit points at the time of application, kept clean throughout the process. Wage range about $35.81 to $60.04 per hour. You applied online with a resume and a mandatory questionnaire, and an incomplete questionnaire or a missing resume was an automatic disqualification. Candidates who passed practical agility testing then underwent a psychological assessment whose results are not shared with candidates. Hamilton also runs a separate volunteer stream, currently advertising for 2027, with a 260-hour training programme.

FSO is a testing provider, not a single test. Candidates book and pay for an FSO day themselves. The physical circuit is CPAT, but the same day also includes a Tread Water test, an Acrophobia (height tolerance) test, a Clinical assessment and an Emotional Stability and Resiliency assessment. Several Ontario services book a "Core Four" day of Clinical, CPAT, Tread Water and Aptitude. Candidates who are fully CPAT-ready are still eliminated on tread water and acrophobia, so train and rehearse those components too.
Gear: CPAT is run in a 50 lb (23 kg) weighted vest, plus an additional 25 lb (11 kg) for the stair climb only. The other components need swimwear for the tread water test and ordinary clothing for the clinical and assessment components.
CPAT total time standard: 10:20
Circuit: Stair Climb · Hose Drag · Equipment Carry · Ladder Raise & Extension · Forcible Entry · Search · Rescue Drag · Ceiling Breach & Pull
CPAT circuit
The same eight-event CPAT sequence scored on total time, with a pass standard of 10 minutes 20 seconds.
Tread Water test
A water competency component that CPAT preparation does not cover at all. It eliminates otherwise well-prepared candidates.
Unconfirmed: The required duration, technique restrictions and pool conditions are not stated here — confirm the current requirement at fireontario.com.
Acrophobia (height tolerance) test
A height tolerance assessment, typically involving aerial ladder work. Another component with no CPAT equivalent.
Unconfirmed: The exact height, apparatus and task performed at the top are not stated here — confirm at fireontario.com.
Clinical assessment
A health and medical screening component of the testing day, paid for by the candidate.
Unconfirmed: The specific measurements, medical standards applied and disqualifying findings are not stated here — confirm at fireontario.com.
Emotional Stability and Resiliency assessment
A psychological assessment component included in the FSO testing day.
Unconfirmed: The instruments used, their length and how results are reported to services are not stated here — confirm at fireontario.com.

Yes - CPAT is the physical component, but it is only one part of the FSO day. The tread water and acrophobia tests eliminate candidates who are fully ready for CPAT, so train for all three.
Being test-ready and fitness-ready before a posting opens matters more than intense preparation after it opens.
