CPS entry-level firefighter exam

CPS Firefighter Entry-Level exam

Format
Per CPS HR Consulting 2026 catalog, metric (Canadian) versions run 100 questions with a 2-hour limit. No calculators, phones or smartwatches
Scoring
70% pass mark where administered by FSO
Sections
Understanding oral information (listening), reading comprehension, mathematical ability, mechanical aptitude
Weighting
The aptitude test is 40% of your overall score. Your ranking combines the resume review, the aptitude test and the Multiple Mini Interview, with the physical test as pass/fail
Provider note
The City describes the test as virtual, by invitation only, covering literacy, numeracy and mechanical reasoning, but does not name the provider on its page. Third-party guides report CPS — treat the format as indicative.
Administered by
CPS HR Consulting (in Ontario administered by Firefighter Services of Ontario; City of Edmonton appears among listed client organizations)

Prep priority

The oral/listening passage is reported to play once with no replay — practise single-pass listening, not transcript reading

Source: City of Edmonton appears on published CPS client organization lists as of July 2026. Edmonton runs its own recruitment; confirm the current written test directly in the posting before preparing.

Questions candidates ask

Does Edmonton Fire Rescue Services use CPAT?

No. Edmonton uses the University of Alberta fitness test, a treadmill test followed by six job simulations in full PPE, and you get one attempt per cycle. Separate job-related tests (smokehouse maze, 30 m ladder climb, ladder raise, hose moving) come later, before a recruit class.

How far in advance should I start preparing?

Being test-ready and fitness-ready before a posting opens matters more than intense preparation after it opens.

Are the practice questions here real exam questions?

No. Every question is original training content written to reflect common recruitment task types. No legitimate provider has access to live exam material.
